The Poetry of Agriculture
Students will sharpen their observation, listening and vocabulary skills with this poetry writing exercise that
features items with an agriculture connection. For higher grades, have students create a haiku, acrositc, mirrored
refrain or cinquain poems.
Collect a group of agricultural items (nuts, leather, wool, potatoes, wheat, pumpkins or fruit).
Place items at stations around the classroom. Assign a number to each item and place a bag next to it with several slips of paper. Write the corresponding number on the bag to match the station.
Explain that agriculture has long inspired artists and writers.
Read aloud some examples of poetry with agricultural themes.
