The Gift of Trees

30 min lesson

The Tree Farmer is a beautifully illustrated story of a boy and his grandfather, who is a tree farmer. The book takes readers on a magical journey through the forest, discovering the gift of trees and our responsibility to care for them, generation to generation. This story is followed by a lesson in which students learn about the many different ways trees are used and how they affect our daily lives.
Ice is the solid form of water. It floats in the water. What will happen when the ice melts? Will the melted ice take up more room in the glass?
Students learn about the small fraction of the planet available for growing food and ways this precious area can be protected. This two-part lesson is an excellent way to introduce students to the importance of preserving soil and soil’s role in feeding 7+ billion people.

This fast-moving relay race teaches students that before any product leaves a factory, or enters a store, it began as a resource or product of the natural world - most likely agriculture. Students will work in teams and run a relay race where they have to quickly decide the source of a product and then race to place it into one of the buckets marked Factory, Store, Farm or Earth.
