Discover the nutrient requirements of dairy cows! Students will collaborate in teams to unlock feed examples through a series of escape boxes. As students work to unlock each escape box, they will be tasked with calculating rations using the Pearson Square method to provide a balanced meal for dairy cows to enjoy! Materials provided include 4 escape boxes, 6 feed samples, 6 scenario cards, 18 box cards, 8 3-digit locks and a treat for the final box. Materials are provided for 6 groups of students.

Utilize this inquiry box with our past virtual field trip video to Rickreall Dairy. In this box, you will find materials for the Milk Makin’ Math lesson. In this lesson, students will learn about the numerous career opportunities involved in the dairy industry. They will also practice real world math problems related to specific careers within the industry. Students will rotate between six different learning stations. Each station will focus on a different dairy career. Students will move around the room, completing math challenges found in the Milk Makin’ Math Activity Book. Materials include 6 station labels, 6 feed samples, feed sample descriptions cards, checkbook, money, photo of milking parlor, syringe without needle, profit and expense definition cards and a weather thermometer. Materials will be provided for 30 students.

Utilize this inquiry box with our past virtual field trip video to Rickreall Dairy. In this box, you will find materials for the Blue’s the Clue: Souring Milk for Science lesson. This lab introduces students to the effect temperature has on reducing and controlling the growth of bacteria. Students will use conventionally pasteurized and ultra-high-temperature (UHT) milk to observe how different temperatures (hot, room temperature, cool, and freezing) affect the growth of spoilage bacteria. They will also learn about the importance of pasteurization in keeping food safe. Materials provided include test tube stands with test tubes, graduated cylinders, methylene blue, carton of UHT milk, and pipettes. Materials are provided for 6 groups of students.
