The state of Oregon is one of the top producing states in nursery crops in the entire nation! Nursery crops have steadily ranked as one of Oregon’s top two agricultural commodities for many years. In 2018, the Greenhouse and Nursery industry ranked as number one on the top commodities list with sales totaling $800 million dollars in a year! Nursery and greenhouse production brings money to the state of Oregon from all over the nation and has provided over 22,000 jobs

Desktop Greenhouses

Students will investigate the importance of light to plants by creating a desktop greenhouse investigation and exploring the process of photosynthesis.

Activity 1: Where is food grown?
Students are provided with a copy of a city landscape to analyze the ability of food to be grown in cities . Then, students are invited to watch a short clip of a video touring an indoor garden where they explore how plants are able to be grown indoors.

Activity 2: Desktop Greenhouse Construction
Students will be investigating the importance of light to plants by creating a desktop greenhouse. Using the materials provided in their kit, they will construct a desktop greenhouse. Half of the students will have a light in their greenhouse and the other half will not. This allows students to explore the importance of light in plant growth.

Activity 3: Why is light important for plants?
Students begin to explore the concept of photosynthesis through watching a short video. Then, students will diagram each element that plays a role in photosynthesis using a plant diagram and a leaf diagram where they label the process on the plant.

Modular Delivery of Curriculum (Virtual)

Curriculum is broken up into small activities that can be done over multiple sittings allowing students to have good breaking spots in between each part.

See this lesson in Modular Delivery through our Google Classroom Example, follow the instructions below.
1. Log in to a google email account, it does not have to be associated with a school.
2. In the menu option, select Classroom.
3. Using the + in the top right hand corner, select join a class.

6. Underneath this section the lessons are broken out into 3 assignments.
