Activity 1: Where is food grown?
Students are provided with a copy of a city landscape to analyze the ability of food to be grown in cities . Then, students are invited to watch a short clip of a video touring an indoor garden where they explore how plants are able to be grown indoors.
Activity 2: Desktop Greenhouse Construction
Students will be investigating the importance of light to plants by creating a desktop greenhouse. Using the materials provided in their kit, they will construct a desktop greenhouse. Half of the students will have a light in their greenhouse and the other half will not. This allows students to explore the importance of light in plant growth.
Activity 3: Why is light important for plants?
Students begin to explore the concept of photosynthesis through watching a short video. Then, students will diagram each element that plays a role in photosynthesis using a plant diagram and a leaf diagram where they label the process on the plant.
