Oregon Grants

Oregon Department of Education   ODE offers programmatic and procurement grants, touching on all aspects of farm to school. Awarded grants can exceed $50,000. Applications are not yet open for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Oregon Metro   Oregon Metro provides information on a variety of grants that seek to further community engagement and time spent outside. The Community Placemaking grants may be especially relevant for school garden programs. The 2019 application period for the placemaking grant has closed.

Portland Garden Club   Three grants of $2,500 are awarded each year to non-profits in the Portland Area who seek to further conservation, horticulture, and/or education. The 2019 application period has closed.

National Grants

2020 CHS Foundation Scholarship Application Are you an Educator looking to attend a national conference in Utah this summer? You are in luck! CHS Foundation provides scholarships to Pre-Kindergarten-12th grade teachers to attend the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference each year.The scholarship covers a $435 early conference registration for teachers selected. The application is now available. Recipients are notified in mid-March before the early registration deadline in mid-April. Only state-certified classroom teachers who are employed by a school district or private school are eligible to apply. The conference is scheduled for June 24-26.

Whole Kids Foundation Grants– School Garden, Beehive & Salad Bar Through their grant programs the Whole Kids Foundation is fostering opportunities to connect kids to the root of their food. A school garden, salad bar or beehive can help spark a child’s curiosity and teach them to love fresh, nutritious, whole foods. Bring the joy of a garden or beehive to your school.
Deadline: Salad Bar grants are available year round. 

Annie’s Grant to Edible School Gardens Want a school garden? Annie’s believes that showing future generations how sustainable food is grown changes their lives. Connecting kids to gardens helps them to star thinking more holistically about their food, their communities, and the planet.

American Heart Association Teaching Gardens grants We want every child to develop healthy eating habits, have access to nutritious food and understand where fruits and vegetables come from. That’s where our Teaching Gardens Network comes in. Funding is available, and you’ll get a hands-on learning experience through school garden support and standards-based curriculum. Just apply to our garden grant program, which is now accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year. Participating schools get access to free gardening resources, a national garden network, name recognition on our Teaching Gardens Network website and certificate or participation.

Green Thumb Challenge Grant GEF and Gardener’s Supply Company have teamed up on an exciting funding opportunity for established youth garden projects nationwide! The organizations are calling on schools and youth groups to submit chronicles of their garden projects in a race to win a $500 prize. The award is designed to support the continued sustainability of an exceptional youth garden program that has demonstrated success, and has impacted the lives of kids and their community.

Slow Food USA (Grants and Gardens Guide)  Seeks to create dramatic and lasting change in the food system. They strive to reconnect Americans with the people, traditions, plants, animals, fertile soils and waters that produce our food. they inspire individuals and communities to change the world through food that is good, clean and fair for all. This site features a long list of national grants, along with relevant details for potential applicants.

Sponsor-A-Hive Bee Partnerships    This grant provides bees and equipment so that people can safely construct, maintain, and observe bees. Participants may receive, honey bees, mason bees, and/or leafcutter bees. A teacher’s kit is also provided.
Deadline: Applications for the next grant cycle will be in Fall 2020.

Honey Bee Grant   With the support of partners, The Bee Cause provides grants to help schools and organizations install and maintain their own observation hives. These hives are an invaluable tool to inspire creativity, teach collaboration, and cultivate critical thinking and STEAM skills in observers of all ages.

The Herb Society of America These grants ensure that the use of herbs in teaching elementary school students will continue for years to come, a tradition Mr. Samull — an elementary school teacher — used in his classroom to engage and inspire his 3rd–6th grade students. Elementary school classrooms with 15 or more students are invited to apply for the funds to start an herb garden.

Project Learning Tree    Project Learning Tree has previously offered the GreenWorks! grant, which funds service learning opportunities that connect classroom learning with real world experiences.

Scotts Miracle Grow Providing monetary grants, educational curriculum and training to connect 10 million children to the benefits of gardens and greenspaces. These grants fund fund a variety of school garden programs. Please follow the link to learn more.

GroMore Grassroots Grant In collaboration with The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation and KidsGardening, The National Head Start Association is honored to bring the life-enhancing benefits of gardens to more children and families in the Head Start community. Schools, community action programs, non-profits, hospitals, community centers and inter-generational groups that hosts Head Start programs are eligible to apply. The grants awarded are in the amount of $5,000, plus a garden kit and materials and gardening educational resources.

$eed Money    Based in Maine, this non-profit provides grant and crowd-funding opportunities for food garden projects around the country.

Salad Bars to Schools  Their goal is for every school in the United States to have a salad bar as part of their school food service program so that every child—from elementary school, to middle school, to high school—has daily access to fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy proteins.  Apply here to start a salad bar in your school cafeteria!

USDA Farm to School Grant Program   Annually, the USDA awards up to $5 million in grants that support farm to school programs.

Cultivating Healthy Communities   School garden projects furthering healthier choices are invited to apply to this grant program through Aetna. In addition to directly addressing healthy behaviors, projects can focus on the built environment, community safety, environmental exposures, and social/economic factors. Up to $2 million in funds will be awarded. There is a two stage application project, so if this looks like a fit, get started!

Look at Agriculture…Organically!   These grants are available to K-8 educators nationwide interested in enhancing student understanding of organic agriculture . Receive up to $1,000 for a school garden project. Schools with 50% or more students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program are especially encouraged to apply.
