Agricultural Literacy Project

2026 LITERACY PROJECT REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!!

The Agricultural Literacy Project connects students to the agricultural community! The project entails reading the featured agriculturally themed book and leading an activity with the students, reinforcing the message or theme of the book. There are two ways this project can be shared with your students: Teachers can choose to have a trained volunteer visit the classroom or complete the literacy project on their own with students.

Sign up for the 2026 Literacy Project! Material distribution will begin mid-March.

New this year! If you volunteer for the Literacy Project, you will leave your entire packet (book and activity) with the classroom. Teachers will keep the whole packet of materials they receive.

Learn more about how the program works at the bottom of the page.

Thank you to the organizations and individuals who helped make the 2026 Literacy Project possible!

About the Literacy Project

The goal of Oregon AITC’s Agricultural Literacy Project is to improve both the reading and agricultural literacy of Oregon students in grades K-4. Each year a new agriculturally-themed book is chosen and a lesson is developed that reinforces the message of the book.

2025 Lit. Project Volunteer Guide Final

How it Works

If the teacher selects the option to have a volunteer present the project, volunteers will work with the classroom teacher to schedule times to read to students grades K-4.  Start to finish, the reading and lesson take 45 minutes. The program is FREE and all materials are completely prepared by Oregon Agriculture in the Classroom. Each participating classroom receives a copy of the book.

If the teacher prefers to present this project to their students themselves. Oregon Agriculture in the classroom will mail all materials a copy of the book for the class to keep.
