This activity will introduce students to farm economics and the variable forces affecting crop production and sales. Students will learn that farming is a business and the importance of anticipating and managing risks that affect profit. Lesson adopted from Oregon Aglink.

The Gift of Trees

30 min lesson

The Tree Farmer is a beautifully illustrated story of a boy and his grandfather, who is a tree farmer. The book takes readers on a magical journey through the forest, discovering the gift of trees and our responsibility to care for them, generation to generation. This story is followed by a lesson in which students learn about the many different ways trees are used and how they affect our daily lives.

The Great Pumpkin Story

30 min lesson

Students describe the life cycle of the pumpkin by slowly pulling the seed, leaf, flowers and growing pumpkins from their very own, handmade Jack-o’-lantern. A great activity to wrap up a pumpkin lesson around Halloween.

Students will investigate the “three sisters” crops (corn, beans, and squash) and explore the benefit to planting these crops together through a germination activity and legend reading exploration.

The Many Hats of Farmers

60 min lesson

Students identify what cows and humans need to survive by exploring the physical characteristics of cows and the food, water, shelter, and other environmental needs of cows compared to their own needs. Students also examine how farmers work to meet the needs of their cows.

The Mystery Ration

90 min lesson

Discover the nutrient requirements of dairy cows! Students will collaborate in teams to unlock feed examples through a series of escape boxes. As students work to unlock each escape box, they will be tasked with calculating rations using the Pearson Square method to provide a balanced meal for dairy cows to enjoy!

They’re the only living things that make their own food. Not only that, but they are the source of all food for every other living thing. What are they? Plants! This lesson makes the connection that people have to plants.
