Agriculture surrounds us and is utilized by us everyday! In this activity, students explore Oregon agriculture through a series of scavenger hunt quests related to Oregon Agriculture in the Classroom’s “Grown in Oregon” map.

A Hundred Bales of Hay

50 min lesson

Students learn about hay and its connection to agriculture while also learning about counting, adding and subtracting.

Oregon farmers and ranchers grow and produce more than 220 different commodities. In fact, Oregon is in the top 3 states for most diverse crops, climates, topography, and agriculture variety. This worksheet, ABCs of Oregon Agriculture, will teach students about the amazing agricultural diversity.

Students will explore issues facing agriculture, analyzing each issue from the perspective of farmers, consumers and lawmakers. Using the perspectives they’ve gained they will create reliable and knowledge based messaging on each issue.

Use this activity to match baby animals with their parent animals.

Students will discover traits in offspring come from parents and offspring from the same parents have different combinations of traits. This will be done through the analysis of images of two parent plants with completely different traits and 18 offspring plants resulting from the crossing of the two parents. Lesson provided in collaboration with Barleyworld, OSU, barleyworld.org/main/education.

Exploring Aquaponics

120 min lesson

The students will identify the basic needs of plants and fish and engineer, assemble, maintain, and observe a small-scale aquaponics system that meets plant and fish needs.

Food Group Sorting

60 min lesson

Students are constantly growing and learning new information about health and nutrition. This lesson teaches about the importance of a well-balanced diet and incorporates all five food groups. Students will participate in a hands-on activity to categorize various foods and meals into the five food groups.

Students will explore a foodborne illness outbreak in the role of an Foodborne Illness Investigator (FBII). Using a game simulation, students will determine the type of foodborne illness through the riboprinting of patients and potential contamination sources. Students will then develop their own investigation, identifying a food of their interest and create a safety protocol to prevent potential contaminants.
