Agriculture surrounds us and is utilized by us everyday! In this activity, students explore Oregon agriculture through a series of scavenger hunt quests related to Oregon Agriculture in the Classroom’s “Grown in Oregon” map.
Oregon farmers and ranchers grow and produce more than 220 different commodities. In fact, Oregon is in the top 3 states for most diverse crops, climates, topography, and agriculture variety. This worksheet, ABCs of Oregon Agriculture, will teach students about the amazing agricultural diversity.
Students will explore issues facing agriculture, analyzing each issue from the perspective of farmers, consumers and lawmakers. Using the perspectives they’ve gained they will create reliable and knowledge based messaging on each issue.
Students will discover traits in offspring come from parents and offspring from the same parents have different combinations of traits. This will be done through the analysis of images of two parent plants with completely different traits and 18 offspring plants resulting from the crossing of the two parents. Students will sort samples of barley based on color and hull type to create histograms. They will hypothesize and investigate the outcomes of planting barley seeds of one color and planting a random mix of different colors. Students will analyze the results of barley seeds that have been planted and harvested, constructing conclusions about trait selection. The students will identify and understand how of plants and fish work together in an aquaponics system through the engineering, assembly, maintenance, and observation of a small-scale aquaponics system.
