The Many Hats of Farmers

60 min lesson

Students identify what cows and humans need to survive by exploring the physical characteristics of cows and the food, water, shelter, and other environmental needs of cows compared to their own needs. Students also examine how farmers work to meet the needs of their cows.

Students will investigate the “three sisters” crops (corn, beans, and squash) and explore the benefit to planting these crops together through a fun coloring story booklet and germination activity.

This lesson is an interactive way to bring germination and the stages of plant development to life.

Vermicomposting

50 min lesson

The class will create a worm bin which will serve as a basis for investigations about ecosystems, life and nutrient cycles, and decomposition.

Ice is the solid form of water. It floats in the water. What will happen when the ice melts? Will the melted ice take up more room in the glass?

Wheat Milling & Counting

90 min lesson

Students will explore the concept of milling wheat for flour for use in their daily lives and use wheat kernels as a nonstandard unit of measurement.

Match animals with the meat they provide to consumers.

Wool Spinning

30 min lesson

Students will get hooked on wool spinning as they learn about wool and where it comes from. Using carded wool and spinning hooks, students will create friendship bracelets to wear home!
